Liam was my first-born. After a complicated pregnancy Liam entered the world 11 weeks early (29wks). Due to his early arrival, his lungs were closed-up and unable to function. Medical staff immediately inserted him with tubes in an attempt to give him oxygen. Liam's lungs were very weak, Doctors eventually managed to provide a small glimmer of hope when one of his lungs accepted the lifeline.
An hour after Liam had been born, I sat by his crib, along with all of the monitors and wires and bleeping noises. This was my first proper contact with my beautiful little boy after a horrendious and frightening delivery, I looked down at his tiny little body and tried to take everything in. As I focused on his face, his eyelids opened and he looked straight at me, only for a second and then he closed his eyes and never opened them again. This is my most cherished memory, I know he wanted me to know that he had seen me and that he knew that I was his mummy.
Liam bravely faught to stay with me, but it wasnt to be. After 14 hours his lungs gave out and the tubes that had kept him breathing were breaking through his immature lungs and effectively releasing any oxygen that was keeping him alive. There was nothing else that could be done, and I was told that it was only fair to say goodbye to my baby and switch off his life support. I tried to say goodbye, but all I could manage was a kiss goodbye.
I spent a long time with Liam after he had passed away, my first cuddle with him was much needed and I took many pictures of him to never forget my little angel.
The 14 hours that we had together are my most treasured and cherished memories and I know that Liam survived for as long as he did because of me, he gave me those precious 14 hours because I needed them.
Liam was beautiful and he was a fighter, he has been my inspiration and changed my prospective on life. This is the gift that Liam left for me.... to make me a better and more caring person.

We celebrated your 18th birthday this year and it was the MOST AMAZING DAY!!! Even though we know you are not with us, it didn't stop us celebrating all of the wonderful things you have brought into my life. I wanted to celebrate the past 18 years because they have not always been a very happy place for me, and the journey has been a long and troubled one at times. Yet, through the tears and the sadness, I think that I can safely say that this year was celebrated in complete style.... The sun was shining, my friends were amazing and we didnt stop laughing all day (such a contrast to some of your earlier birthdays). I had my tattoo done this year to mark your 18th birthday and I am pleased that I now have ALL of my children's names etched into my back - my tribute to you and everything that I have learned from losing you (the hardest lessons are often the most painful). I love you son and I guess it is about time I stopped referring to you as my baby - but somehow, it feels like we have both "come of age", It couldnt feel more PERFECT!!!!
I love you Liam and I will never forget your 18th birthday and for all of the right reasons too.

Well.......here we are, another year has passed and today would be your 17th birthday and I celebrate it with you even though you are far away.
I do not dread your birthday anymore because it is the 1 day of the year that I constantly think of you!!! It is the one day that I reflect and remember and cry if I want to.
Today we celebrate your brother Shane's 16th birthday and I must just tell you that Shane has decided that he is going to change his name and include your name as his middle name to remember his baby brother that he never got to meet but loves dearly......In many ways Liam, you live on through Shane and that is the biggest gift anyone could ever have given me.
So here's to another birthday and another year passed, happy birthday son.........I LOVE YOU AND ALWAYS WILL........Love Mummy xxxx
